Information about University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is a global leader in research and teaching. We provide diverse and extensive areas of study organized around intimate learning communities. That is what creates an exceptional learning environment for our students. Customize your education at U of T and join a network of over 500,000 accomplished alumni around the world.

Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto has evolved into Canada’s leading institution of learning, discovery and knowledge creation. We are proud to be one of the world’s top research-intensive universities, driven to invent and innovate.

Our students have the opportunity to learn from and work with preeminent thought leaders through our multidisciplinary network of teaching and research faculty, alumni and partners.

The ideas, innovations and actions of more than 500,000 graduates continue to have a positive impact on the world.

The University of Toronto is dedicated to fostering an academic community in which the learning and scholarship of every member may flourish, with vigilant protection for individual human rights, and a resolute commitment to the principles of equal opportunity, equity and justice.

Within the unique university context, the most crucial of all human rights are the rights of freedom of speech, academic freedom, and freedom of research. And we affirm that these rights are meaningless unless they entail the right to raise deeply disturbing questions and provocative challenges to the cherished beliefs of society at large and of the university itself.

It is this human right to radical, critical teaching and research with which the University has a duty above all to be concerned; for there is no one else, no other institution and no other office, in our modern liberal democracy, which is the custodian of this most precious and vulnerable right of the liberated human spirit.

Admission procedure into University of Toronto

If you’re currently studying outside Canada – or if your most recent academic experience was outside Canada – find the relevant country or educational system in the International Admission Requirements section below to determine your minimum admission requirements. Use the Program Finder to see if there are additional, program-specific requirements for your intended program of study.

(Quicklinks to: USA, British-Patterned Education, French-Patterned Education and CAPE)

If you are a home-schooled student currently completing your secondary school studies, you can find specific admission information here.

Required Documents:

Official and complete transcripts for your secondary school studies and notarized English translations of all documents issued in a language other than English or French are required.

If you are attending an international school that offers multiple curricula please ask your school to specify the type of program in which you are enrolled and ensure that appropriate documents are submitted.

If you are currently enrolled in the final year of your matriculation program, we will review your application for a possible conditional offer of admission. If you do not qualify on the basis of your interim/mid-term results, it is unlikely that we will be able to reassess your application when final grades are received; however, if space is available in the program of your choice, we may reconsider your application.

Documents must be submitted electronically via Parchment/Naviance whenever possible; documents received in this way are considered official. If this is not possible, you may be given the opportunity to upload your documents when you check your status through Join U of T. Uploaded documents are considered unofficial. You may also arrange with your high school or examination board to send your official transcripts to us; these documents too would be considered official.

If you have written or plan to write any of the following tests or exams, arrange to have the results sent electronically directly from the appropriate testing authority: SATs, APs, IBs, or ACTs.
